A little brief on the Great Barrier ReefThe Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef Simultaneously in the world and the largest living thing in the world. At 2300 km in length, the Great Barrier Reef is roughly the size of Japan and is visible from space.
The reef is located off the coast of Queensland in Australia and North Consists of 2,900 individual reefs. It is home to: - 1,500 species of fish - 411 types of coral - 1/3 of the worlds soft coral - 6/7 of the worlds endangered - 30 species of marine turtles marine mammals including the - 10% of the worlds fish vulnerable Dugong And is an extremely well renowned vacation spot. :) |

Dangers
BOX JELLYFISH - The body of a Box Jellyfish is shaped like a cube with tentacles coming out from all sides. Stings from These tentacles ARE fatal. These Jellyfish reside in river mouths or in muddy shallow waters. They rarely Appear in reef islands but special stinger enclosures are provided for swimmers to avoid risk. Stinger season is between November and March.
REEF SHARKS - Reefs Sharks tend to not approach Humans Unless Aroused by food. They prefer shallow, inshore waters.
RINGED BLUE OCTOPUS - Octopus These are extremely beautiful and only the size of a golf ball but are better to look at than touch Because Their adult poison and can kill in minutes and there is no known antidote.The blue ringed Octopus can break through a wet-suit. They reside in rock pools and an electric blue glow When threatened or in defense mode.
Irukandji JELLYFISH - These Jellyfish are tiny. They are roughly the size of an Australian two dollar coin. They are quite similar to the Box Jellyfish except That they make home in deep water as appose to the Box Jellyfish Which prefers shallow water (Although the Irukandji can get washed up to shore). They are a threat to divers and snorkelers.
CONE SHELLS - Several types of cone shell (but not all) are venomous and their venom Consists of some of the most potent neurotoxins known to human.
LION FISH - Lion fish posses venomous fin spines Which Produces That can puncture wounds are rarely fatal. They have like Zebra That strips vary in color.
SEA URCHIN - The Sea Urchin has long, dark spikes That can pierce the skin causes an infection. Not all Sea Urchins are venomous but some of the ones That Are, such as the Flower urchin, can be deadly.
CORAL SEA SNAKES - Sea Snakes are KILLER. They reside around the surface of the water and can get caught in currents That p ull them closer to the shore. They are very bright in color and can penetrate even in wet suit, much like the Blue Ringed Octopus.

Seaweed and Algae - These are not true plants Considered Because of Their lack of roots, stems and leaves but they do need sunlight to photosynthesize like most other plants (including Sea grass) do. There are roughly 400 species of Seaweed and Algae Throughout the Great Barrier Reef.
