PINK LAKE - LAKE HILLIERLake Hillier, also known as 'Pink Lake', is a 600 meter long body of water located on the edge of middle island, the largest of the isles that help to make up Recherche Archi Pelago off the south west coast of Western Australia.
You can visit this attraction by plane and look down to see it in all of its glory and you can also take a cruise around the island in the southern ocean only a short walk from the lake itself. A great thing about this lake is that although it is a salt lake, it's perfectly safe to swim in. :) |
WHEN SHOULD YOU GO? WHAT WEATHER IS BEST FOR YOUR VISIT?
The best time to visit Lake Hillier based on weather would be during winter (June, July and August). This is because, similar to The Great Barrier Reef, the algae in the water bloom in colder temperatures. As a result of this the water becomes a more radiant shade of bubblegum pink.
In terms of what time of day is optimal, sunset would be the best option as it is said that is when the colours are at their peek.

Lake Hillier is surrounded by sand and luscious fields of paperback eucalyptus trees. It is only a few feet away from the blue southern ocean, separated by more sand and vegetation.
The lake consists of an abundance of algae which gives it the trademark bubblegum pink colour.

WHY IS LAKE HILLIER PINK?
Scientists aren't entirely sure why Lake Hillier is this pink colour, but there are speculations that it is because of high salinity and a living organism in the lake called Dunaliella Sulina which is the cause for most of the lake's salt and also produces a red dye which gives the lake it's colour.
Another theory is that the salt crusts contain red Halophilic Bacteria which leads to the pink color of the water.
